Increased punishment for Russian state border violation

Moscow, Dec 23 (IANS/TASS): Russian President Vladimir Putin Tuesday signed a law increasing the punishment for violating the state border.

According to the law, individuals violating the rules of entrance and temporary stay in the border area will face a fine of up to 1,000 roubles (around $20), compared with 500 roubles as of now.

If a crime is committed by foreigners or persons without citizenship, they could be expelled from the country.

The law also toughens sanctions for carrying out illegal business activities or mass public events in the border area.

Officials and legal entities could face a maximum fine of 5,000 roubles and 10,000 roubles.
