Charan Singh remembered in UP on 112th birth anniversary

Lucknow, Dec 23 (IANS): Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Tuesday paid tributes to the late former prime minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on his 112th birth anniversary.

Describing him as a leader of all sections of the society, Akhilesh Yadav committed himself to walking down the path shown by the former prime minister.

Recalling how Neta-ji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) has been fond of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the chief minister said his state government was working for the prosperity of all sections of the society, development of the villages, and farmers' progress, a cause espoused by the late farmer leader.

Describing Chaudhary Charan Singh as the true leader and well wisher of farmers, Akhilesh Yadav said Singh remains the tallest leader amid farmers till date.

The young Samajwadi leader added that the present state government was working towards developing the villages and farmers' progress on the lines of the late leader.

The state government had earlier declared a public holiday for the birth anniversary of Charan Singh.

Born Dec 23, 1902, in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district, Chaudhary Charan Singh served as the sixth prime minister of the country for six months (from July 28, 1979 to Jan 14, 1980).
