Cycle pump sterilisation case: 2 suspended in Odisha


Bhubaneswar, Dec 23 (IANS): The Odisha government Tuesday suspended two medical officers in connection with the use of a bicycle pump to inflate women's abdomens during sterilisation surgeries in a community health centre (CHC) in Angul district.

Angul district collector Sachin Ramchandra Jadhav said the administration suspended Shankarlal Agarwal, additional district medical officer of Angul and Banarpal CHC in-charge Deepak Garnaik over the incident.

"The suspension was effected following a preliminary inquiry report. Action will be taken against the people involved in the case after the inquiry is completed," said Jadhav.

Taking suo moto cognisance of a media report, the Odisha Human Rights Commission had sought a detailed report from the state health and family welfare department and the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Angul within four weeks.

The district administration is also conducting an inquiry to identify the people involved in the case.

Mahesh Prasad Rout, the surgeon who used the bicycle pump had been de-empanelled and notice served on him.
