No New Year celebrations in Karachi

Islamabad, Dec 24 (IANS): The New Year celebrations have been cancelled in Karachi in view of the Peshawar army school carnage, media reported Wednesday.

Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui said permission would not be granted for New Year celebrations and no ceremony will take place in the city to celebrate the event, reported The News International.

The whole country has plunged into a state of grief after the Dec 16 terror attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar in which 148 people, including 132 children, were killed.

"The country's current security situation also does not warrant New Year celebrations," Siddiqui said.

He said hotels and other places would not be permitted to host events related to New Year celebrations.
