Andrew Yule to focus on packet tea, green tea in 2015

Kolkata, Dec 24 (IANS): State-owned Andrew Yule Wednesday said it intends to increase its presence in the packet tea and green tea segments.

"Packet tea presently comprises five percent of our total produce and in the next two to three years, we will take it to 25 percent", company chairman and managing director Kallol Datta said here.

Datta said the tea division of the diversified conglomerate would earn a revenue of Rs. 200 crore by the end of this fiscal and increase its production to 12 million kg.

Presently, the company produces 10 million kg of tea across 15 gardens spread across north Bengal and Assam. In the last fiscal, the revenue stood at Rs.183 crore.

The company would also stress on the green tea segment.

"Green tea is the future and there is 100 percent year-on-year growth. We are considering this segment as a huge opportunity", company director-in-charge for teas Sunil Munshi said.

The company, as of now, produces a small quantity of green tea.

"We are increasing our green tea production capacity by 2-3 lakh kgs and would eye both domestic and the export markets," Munshi said.

The company is also in talks with the Assam government to purchase tea gardens in the Brahmaputra valley in the state in phases.

On the proposed auctioning of the Pandem and Rangaroon tea gardens by the West Bengal state government, Datta said the company was contemplating to participate in it.

"We don't have deep pockets for export. We will first develop the customers and then think about it," Datta said, when questioned about exports.
