Brazil's president names 13 cabinet members

Brasilia, Dec 25 (IANS): Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has announced the names of 13 members of her second-term cabinet, media reported.

The list made public by the president's office Wednesday includes six ministers who belong to the conservative Brazilian Democratic Movement (PMDB), Xinhua reported citing the G1 news website.

Rousseff, who belongs to the leftist Workers' Party (PT), was re-elected to a second four-year term in October by a slight margin that has forced her to make more concessions to the country's right-wing forces, which also gained seats in Congress.

According to G1, Senator and former governor of Amazonas state Eduardo Braga will take over the ministry of mining and energy, replacing Edison Lobao.

Senator Katia Abreu, who is also president of the National Confederation of Agriculture, will head the agriculture ministry, replacing Neri Geller.

Helder Barbalho, the former mayor of Ananindeua in Para state, will take over the department of fishing, replacing Eduardo Lopes.

Vinicius Lages stays on at the tourism ministry, while legislator Eliseu Padilha takes over at the secretariat of civil aviation, substituting Moreira Franco.

The secretariat of ports will be headed by Edinho Araujo, who replaces Cesar Borges.

Jaques Wagner, of the PT, will replace Celso Morim in the defence ministry; Gilberto Kassab, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), will replace Gilberto Occhi at the ministry of cities; and legislator George Hilton, of the Brazilian Republican Party (PRB), will substitute Aldo Rebelo at the ministry of sports.

Rebelo of the Brazil Communist Party (PCdoB), will move to the ministry of science and technology; Cid Gomes of the Republican Party of the Social Order (PROS) will head education; Valdir Simon will head general auditing; and Nilma Lino Gomes will take over the secretariat of racial equality promotion.

The heads of some other important ministries, including health and justice, are yet to be named, but are expected to be announced by Dec 29.
