Indonesia marks 10th tsunami anniversary


Jakarta, Dec 26 (IANS): Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla Friday presided over a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, which devastated the country's westernmost province of Aceh.

Thousands of locals and dignitaries from dozens of countries gathered in Blang Padang field, in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh, The Jakarta Post reported.

The earthquake and tsunami Dec 26, 2004 caused considerable human and economic losses to Aceh.

More than 221,000 people were killed and went missing while over 800,000 were displaced.

Also attending the ceremony were representatives from dozens of international organisations that had provided Aceh with post-tsunami aids and recovery assistance.

Indonesia was the hardest-hit country, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.
