Muscat, Dec 9: Winston Peris, smart and versatile 12th standard student of Indian School – Al Wadi Al Kabir, Muscat, secured the runners-up place in the prestigious IT Prodigy 2006 quiz contest organized by Times of Oman  / Al Shabiba Newspapers at the City Amphitheatre – Qurum on Thursday, 7th December 2006.  Winston by his ‘Great Sporting Act ” during the final moments of the quiz, won the hearts of thousands of quiz-loving audience and unofficially became  “IT Prodigy Hero” of Muscat.

Winston, elder son of Valerian and Wilma Peris of Gurpur Parish – Mangalore Diocese offered a tough and challenging competition to the reigning champion, Vivek Wali, Indian School Muscat. He was fully prepared for his challenge and had a great desire to reach the pinnacle in the IT Quiz competition. However, luck played its own role for Winston, ever smiling youngster, and forced to be content with the second place.

As reported in the local Newspaper, Times of Oman, the cool dude of IT in Muscat, Vivek Wali, literally snatched the crown from a quiet, but formidable contender, Winston Peris, in a nail-biting tiebreaker.

Heartbeats went fluttering like mad as the quiz took a seesaw feel in the final until Winston squared off with Vivek pushing them both into a tension-filled tie-breaker, where the champion edged his tough challenger by getting the full version of the acronym ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) right in yet another quiz buzzing final segment,

But, while the crown went to Vivek, the plaudits went to Winston for his singular act in allowing Vivek to get the benefit in an earlier buzzer round in the final. Although Winston hit the buzzer to a Pickbrain query, he realized that Vivek had pressed it before him, but the latter’s buzzer was apparently not working.

This sporting action greatly endeared him to the crowd and the quizmaster to such an extent that while Vivek was officially crowned the IT Prodigy 2006, Winston was unofficially crowned the ‘IT Prodigy hero’ by all of the quiz loving masses present at yet another successful quiz by the Times of Oman/Al Shabiba last evening.
