Raghubar Das to be first non-tribal CM of Jharkhand

Ranchi, Dec 26 (NDTV): BJP leader Raghubar Das will be the next chief minister of Jharkhand, the first non-tribal leader in the state to hold the post. The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the party's newly-elected lawmakers in state capital Ranchi.

The BJP and its ally, the All Jharkhand Students' Union, had won the state polls, winning 42 seats in the 81-member assembly.

59-year-old Mr Das, a former deputy chief minister and BJP vice president, had been touted a frontrunner for the top job especially after three-time former chief minister Arjun Munda, considered the tallest tribal leader of the party, lost the elections from his stronghold Kharsawan. Another former chief minister from the party, Babulal Marandi who lost two seats that he contested, is also a tribal leader.

Hence, the BJP is reportedly considering a tribal leader as deputy chief minister to placate the community which comprises around 32 per cent of Jharkhand's population. Neelkanth Munda and Shiv Shankar Urav, sources say, are the likely contenders for the post. Mr Munda, sources add, is likely to be appointed a national vice president of the party.

Two senior BJP leaders, Health Minister JP Nadda and Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, were the observers at today's legislature party meeting to oversee the election of the new chief minister.

"The party's Parliamentary Board and the honorable Prime Minister will take a decision on this. But I wish to assure the people of Jharkhand and Jamshedpur that I would always be there to serve them," Mr Das, 59, said on Tuesday soon after it emerged that the BJP-led coalition had emerged victorious.

Jharkhand has had nine governments and three stints of President's Rule since it was created in 2000.

In its election campaign, the BJP had promised a stable government in the state. It did not project a chief ministerial candidate and built its campaign around Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his development agenda. The PM had addressed several rallies in the state.

Raghubar Das is not a Brahmin. He belongs to Teli Caste which comes under OBC. Teli caste is the same as Ganiga caste of Karnataka and Prime Minister Modi belongs to same Caste which is called as Ganchi Caste in Gujarat. This Caste equation with Modi has tilted the CM post of Jarkhand in favor of Raghubar Das.

we have seen what a tribal cm has done for last 15 years in jharkand which is one of the most poorest states having mineral reserves as one of the worlds highest reserves.now it is a chance for a backward class cm to position the state as one of the richest in india.

jharkand can be converted to the richest state in india with several billions of dollars of minerals in the state which should benefit the poor people of the state.

VERY GOOD DECISION...~!! though I have every reason that (like parameshi in karnataka) BJP people themselves made sure marandi and Munda lost their seats..... these tribal leaders like munda, soren, marandis have done nothing to the TRIBALS!.... also, Yeshwant sinha or some upper caste leaders would be a misfit in this demography!! a backward TELI leader will take along all in this state...! this state is one of the richest, in case of its natural resources... and you can work wonders...

Once, they were in dark, inspite of large coal blocks available.. becuase of petty politics of Lalu yadav of BIHAR.. this region never had electricity... similar to chattisgadh ( Diggi's misrule in MP)... when these guys started prodcuing electricity, they refused to sell it to their parent state, instead sold it to higher prices, to Maharastra and rest of the states!... that is why I say, revenge is sweet! today Jharkhand can surpass, Bihar, if required.. :)
