'Unorganised labour segment priority for government'

Kolkata, Dec 27 (IANS): Unorganised sector labour reforms are a priority of the Narendra Modi government which is also taking steps to boost the labour welfare measures, a union minister said Saturday.

"My focus area will be the unorganised sector. First time in the country, led by Prime Minster Narendra Modi, we have taken a new initiative - Shram Suvidha Portal (SSP). With the portal we'll provide labour identity number (LIN) to the establishments," union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattetreya said on the sidelines of an event organised by SREI here.

Dattatreya said the centre has already provided 7.5 lakh institutions with LIN numbers and it is likely to rise soon.

The central government has also allotted workers a Universal Account Number (UAN) - a portable number which gives the members greater control over their money and links EPF and ESI services.

"We have provided Universal Account Number to workers - now there will be transparency and accountability. All EPF and ESI services will be available with SSP," Dattatreya said.
