Seoul to conduct first independent missile defence drill

Seoul, Dec 29 (IANS): South Korea plans to conduct its first missile defence drill in 2015 to test the effectiveness of locally developed defence programmes, an official said Monday.

South Korea has been developing its own Kill-Chain and Korean Air and Missile Defence (KAMD) systems to better detect and respond to military provocations from North Korea, Yonhap News Agency reported.

"Military authorities are planning our first independent Korean Peninsula missile defence drill during the first half of 2015," the official said.

"The drill is aimed at testing the effectiveness of the KAMD and Kill-Chain systems that have been developed by the South Korean military and identifying any flaws," he added.

The drill is expected to run on the missile defence simulation model developed jointly with the US, the official added. The exercise is also likely to use military intelligence provided by Japan.

The agreement, also involving the US, calls for sharing military secrets on North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
