80 militants surrender in Afghanistan

Kabul, Dec 29 (IANS): An 80-member armed group of militants laid down their weapons and gave up fighting in Afghnaistan's northern Jauzjan province Monday, provincial police chief Faqir Mohammad Jauzjani said.

"A total of 80 militants under Mufti Nematullah who were involved in anti-government activities in Qushtapa and Darzab districts over the past couple of years laid down arms and gave up fighting today," Jauzjani told Xinhua.

The surrender of these people could be a major blow to the anti-government militants in Jauzjan and adjoining provinces, the police chief added.

Taliban militants, who are active in parts of Jauzjan province, are yet to comment on the matter.
