Dubai, Dec 11: A water pipe near Shaikh Zayed Road in Dubai was damaged last night, flooding the areas between Defence Roundabout and the Al Safa Interchange.

According to Road and Transport Authority officials, who were at the scene, the 1200mm diameter water pipe was damaged when a sub-contractor working on the service road (opposite Metropolitan Hotel) accidentally hit the pipe at around 10pm.

The sub-contractor was digging the area for road works.

"We are trying to get things under control,” said an RTA official.

"We have opened the galleys and are also getting the water drained with the help of tankers,” he added.

The official said that both Dubai Electricity and Water Authority as well as the RTA are at work to repair the damage.

They had dug trenches to divert the water away from the road.
Traffic on Shaikh Zayed Road towards Abu Dhabi was severely hampered and the Defence Roundabout was blocked.
