Ukraine, breakaway Donetsk leaders agree on 'full truce'

Kiev, Dec 30 (IANS): Representatives from Kiev and the leadership of independence-seeking insurgents from Donetsk region have agreed to sign a deal on "full truce" during their latest meeting, a senior Ukrainian defence official said Tuesday.

"Based on the results of the meeting (late Monday), a protocol on the complete cessation of hostilities is expected to be signed soon," Xinhua quoted Vladyslav Selezniov, acting spokesman for the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as telling reporters.

The deal on ending the fighting in Donetsk region is set to be inked later Tuesday, he said.

He added that a truce protocol for the neighbouring Lugansk region is expected to be signed not earlier than Wednesday, when a meeting between Ukrainian military officers and the leadership of the self-proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic will take place.

The two warring sides in eastern Ukraine agreed on a ceasefire Sep 5, but the agreement has never been fully implemented.

Since then, the parties have held several rounds of peace talks in an attempt to end the eight-month-old conflict, which has left more than 4,770 people killed so far.
