Kashmir New Year celebrations to miss snowfall

Srinagar, Dec 31 (IANS): The New Year celebrations in Kashmir Wednesday are unlikely to see fresh snowfall, according to the weather office.

The Met Office has forecast the weather would be dry across the state in the next 24 hours till Thursday morning.

"There is a remote possibility of snowfall today (Wednesday) or tomorrow (Thursday)," an official told IANS here.

The official said the minimum temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir had improved marginally, although these continued to remain below the freezing point in the Valley and the cold desert of Ladakh region.

The minimum temperature was minus 2 degrees in Srinagar against the minus 3.8 degrees Tuesday. The improvement in the minimum temperature is because of cloud cover during the night.

The minimum temperature was minus 3.2 in Gulmarg, minus 3.5 in Pahalgam, minus 14.1 in Leh and minus 13 degrees in Kargil town.

Jammu city recorded 9.9 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature Wednesday, the official said.
