New Year celebrations banned in Karachi

Islamabad, Dec 31 (IANS): Road blocks will be put in place in Karachi Wednesday night to prevent any New Year celebrations from taking place.

The road blocks will be erected in the evening and the Sindh government has decided to deploy 7,000 policemen all over the city, Dawn online reported.

The decision to ban New Year celebrations was announced earlier this month by Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui.

"The country's current security situation also does not warrant New Year celebrations," Siddiqui said.

He said hotels and other places would not be permitted to host celebratory events to the New Year.

Pillion riding has been banned until 6 a.m Thursday.

Security in the city has been tightened in order to prevent any untoward incidents.
