Mumbai, Jan 5 (FP): Tension gripped parts of central Mumbai after a group of revellers from an Eid procession clashed with members of another community on Sunday.
According to reports, the clashes between the two groups took place during the Eid-e-Milad procession in Lalbaugh. However, there are varied reports on what really caused the incident.
According to a Times of India report, a group of boys who were returning after attending Eid-e-Milad procession at south Mumbai got involved in an argument with another group at Lalbaug.
"The situation went out of control and some bikers were hit. A group of people, who hit the boys, was carrying lathis...," reported ToI.
According to a Hindustan Times report, a group of youths created a disturbance in the area after being stopped by traffic police.
"Young men from a particular community were stopped by traffic policemen, for travelling on the wrong side of the road on Sunday evening," reported the Hindustan Times.
The Mid-day reported that the revellers had hit a traffic constable which prompted others present there to attack them. A motorcycle was burnt during the clash and Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria visited the spot to ensure law and order was maintained.
Following the incident, police personnel were rushed to the spot and traffic routes were diverted.
"There was no curfew but a curfew-like situation," ToI quoted a source as saying.
