Bangalore, Dec 15: The State Government has decided to make Kannada language as a compulsory subject from eighth standard for all students switching over from Central syllabi to the State syllabi from the next academic year.

A decision in this regard was taken at the Cabinet meeting on Thursday. Earlier, students (including Kannadigas) who were switching over from the central syllabi from eighth standard were given the option of taking English as an alternate language instead of Kannada.

The State Government had made Kannada language subject compulsory for all students including non-Kannadigas at the beginning of the current academic year but it was deferred for a year as it was challenged in the court, said Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavarj Horatti.
