Hyderabad, Jan 7(The Hindu): The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) has launched a weeklong campaign against police harassment of innocent persons, in the name of traffic violations.
As part of the campaign, the Majlis have planned protest meetings all over the city. The first such meeting was held at Jahanuma on Friday.
The programme will culminate into a dharna at Indira Park next Saturday.
The protest meetings will be held at Musheerabad, Erragada, Rangeli Khikdki, First Lancer, Amberpet and Secunderabad.
The Majlis is seeking the ouster of Police Commissioner A.K. Mohanty as it feels the latter is responsible for the growing harassment in the name of helmet rule enforcement.
"The Khairatabad incident where two Muslim boys were killed due to the overzealousness of the police is unfortunate. The authorities are now trying to protect the policemen responsible for the incident - which is clear from the FIR, which carries no names," said Majlis MP, Asaduddin Owaisi.
Mr. Owaisi accused the police of singling out Muslims for harassment in the name of traffic violations.
"If the persecution of Muslims did not stop the same fate would befall the Government as the Telugu Desam Government," Mr. Owaisi warned.
He said the Majlis would organise protests in democratic manner to highlight the issue and to demand removal of Mr. Mohanty.
