Hunt for SIMI activists in Andhra district

Hyderabad, Jan 7 (IANS): An alert was sounded in Sriharikota, Tada and other areas in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh Wednesday as police launched a hunt for five suspected activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

Authorities have tightened security at Sriharikota Range (SHAR), the satellite launching station of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and other vital installations in the district.

Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu Police launched joint operations on the border areas between the two states to track down the SIMI activists, suspected to be involved in bomb blast in Chennai last year.

The hunt was launched after intelligence agencies gave a tip-off that the suspected terrorists may have sneaked into Nellore district.
