Six killed in militant attack in Afghanistan

Kabul, Jan 7 (IANS): At least six people were killed and one injured after militants attacked two vehicles of a local firm in Afghanistan's Baghlan province Wednesday morning, police said.

"Two vehicles of a local company were attacked by militants in Baghlan-e-Markazi district that left six workers killed and another injured," Xinhua reported citing a statement issued by provincial police chief Aminullah Amarkhil.

"The vehicles were on their way towards the neighbouring Badakhshan province when the attack took place around 7.00 a.m. (0230 GMT). An investigation was launched into the incident," said Amarkhil.

The targeted vehicles belonged to a road construction firm, an unofficial source said, adding that three workers went missing after the attack.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, the police chief said.

The Taliban insurgent group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban have intensified attacks over the past couple of months as the Afghan forces took over full responsibility of security in the country from the NATO-led international forces earlier this month.

About 10,000 civilians were killed and injured due to Taliban-led insurgency in the country in 2014, according to U.N. mission officials.
