Cold wave continues in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 8 (IANS): Cold wave continued across Jammu and Kashmir Thursday although bright sunshine replaced foggy mornings in the Valley.

"The present cold wave conditions will continue across Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours while a further drop in the minimum temperatures is likely because of a clear night sky," an official of the Met department said.

The minimum temperature was minus 4.2 in Srinagar Thursday, while it was minus 3.6 in Gulmarg and minus 7.4 in Pahalgam.

Kargil town in Ladakh region was the coldest town at minus 16.6 degrees Celsius, while the neighbouring Leh town recorded minus 16 as the night temperature, the Met Office said.

Jammu city recorded a minimum of 4.4 degrees Celsius Thursday.

The mornings have been sunny for the past two days which is unlikely during the present 40-day period of harsh winter known as the 'Chillai Kalan'.
