Peru tribunal ratifies 25-year jail for ex-president Fujimori

Lima, Jan 8 (IANS/EFE): Peru's Constitutional Tribunal (TC) has ratified a 25-year prison sentence imposed in 2009 on former president Alberto Fujimori for crimes against humanity, according to a resolution made public by the court.

The decision, which was passed Oct 14 but only made public Wednesday, rejected an appeal for reversal of the prison sentence.

In the decision published on its official website, TC said that it was not responsible for determining if the convict should be liberated for not posing a threat to society or if his sentence should be annulled under abstract claims regarding his health and advanced age.

Fujimori, 75, was sentenced to 25 years in jail in 2009 after he was deemed responsible for two massacres carried out by the security forces as well as the kidnapping of a journalist and a businessman during his 1990-2000 tenure.

The former president has been convicted in three other cases on less serious charges, while his sentence for financial irregularities, concerning the sensationalist "chicha press" newspapers in 2000, is scheduled to be handed down Thursday.
