South Korea, US hold first space policy dialogue

Seoul, Jan 9 (IANS): South Korea and the US held their first talks on the issue of growing space debris and ways to bolster cooperation in the matter, Seoul's foreign ministry said Friday.

At the space policy dialogue held in Washington Thursday, officials from the two countries exchanged views on how to cooperate on the peaceful use of outer space, the ministry said.

A South Korean satellite barely avoided a possible collision with space debris earlier this month, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The ministry said the two sides shared the view that growing space waste posed a serious risk and discussed ways to respond to the issue.

The meeting was a follow-up to the Seoul-Washington summit held in April and November last year.

South Korea and the US agreed to hold the second space policy dialogue in 2016, it added.
