Cops scour Sunanda death scene for new clues

NEW DELHI, Jan 10 (Express News) : To unravel the mystery behind the death of Sunanda Pushkar, a team of Delhi Police officers visited the crime scene at the Leela Palace suite number 345 here, almost a year after the incident, and tried to reconstruct the incident on the basis of recorded statements by the staff of her husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

The police had sealed the suite on January 18 after Sunanda’s body was sent for post-mortem. “Our team went to the crime spot and tried to recreate and analyse the crime,” said a senior police officer, adding that the police team went there on Thursday night. The police also tried to collect forensic samples and some evidence from the room.

The special team also questioned the hotel staff while they visited the suite where the deceased had stayed.

The police on Friday again questioned Tharoor’s driver Bajrangi and two more people and recorded their statements.

The investigators said they would soon question 12 more people including Tharoor; Sunanda’s son from her previous marriage Shiv Menon; her two brothers Ashish Dass and Rajesh Pushkar and Sunanda’s cardiologist Rajat Mohan.

The police will also grill Tharoor’s Personal Assistant (PA) and another family friend Sanjay Dewan, who had found Pushkar dead at 5.30 pm when he came to enquire about her health. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Tharoor’s PA, was also present at the hotel.

They are also looking for a woman ‘Kaitie’ whose name had surfaced during the arguments between Tharoor and Pushkar, which was heard by Tharoor’s domestic help Narayan Singh.

“Senior journalist Nalini Singh will also be asked to join the probe,” the officer said. Besides, the investigators will call Tharoor’s two officers on special duty Shiv Kumar Prasad and Abhinav Kumar.

When questioned about grilling Congress leaders, the officer said they were still probing the matter. They have made a list of people to be questioned.

In the meantime, Sunil Trakru, a family friend who dropped off Sunanda Pushkar at the hotel from the airport, was questioned by police in December.

Narayan Singh revealed that Tharoor and Sunanda had a fight a day before Pushkar’s death.

They had also had fought at the airport after which Trakru dropped her home and Tharoor left for his house at Lodhi Colony.

“The couple had come from Kerala on January 14, but Tharoor went to his house in Lodhi Colony, while Sunanda left for the hotel,” Narayan told during interrogation.
