Udupi, Dec 20: The rice production in the district in the year 2006 has crossed the expectations owing to equal distribution of rain in the district.  It was expected that the total rice production would be around 1, 25, 182 tons.  But by the end of monsoon the total production was reported to be 1, 50,000 tons.

However, owing to some excess and untimely rains, the farmers have incurred loss too.  While 3,519.4 mm rain was recorded in the last year, 4,091.5 mm rain was recorded in the current year.  Moreover, sudden rains in the month of October and November have also resulted in delay in harvesting.

A total of 26 farmers at Mundkur, Nitte, Bola, Edu and Nallur have incurred loss to excess rains.  The total loss has been estimated at Rs 94,036 out of which 25 farmers have already been distributed with Rs 14,216 as compensation.
