Afghan president nominates cabinet ministers

Kabul, Jan 12 (IANS): Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani unfolded the long awaited list of ministers-designate before Wolesi Jirga, or the lower house of parliament, for its approval Monday.

The list came more than 100 days after the presidential inauguration with all the ministries being run by acting ministers, Xinhua news agency reported citing Afghan national television.

In his maiden speech after being sworn-in Sep 29, President Ghani promised to form a cabinet within 45 days. But the announcement of new cabinet members was delayed three times.

According to a presidential decree, the acting ministers would continue their duties until the ministers-designate get approval from parliament.

The Wolesi Jirga is expected to approve the minister-nominees within days.
