'Congress still relevant to Delhi polls'

New Delhi, Jan 12 (IANS): The Congress Monday said it was the only relevant party in the assembly elections in Delhi, while it welcomed the announcement of polling dates by the Election Commission.

"The results will show that the Congress is the only relevant party and the myths are about to be shattered," said Congress national spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said in a press briefing.

"We welcome the end to speculations and the announcement of firm election date by the Election Commission of India," he added.

Delhi will go to the polls Feb 7 and the votes will be counted Feb 10.

Surjewala said the entire Congress leadership and its workers were "enthused" and looked forward to going to polls once again.

He said the party would like to "re-establish its grassroots reach, connect and hold with people of Delhi through the magnificence of the electoral process into forming a Congress government in Delhi."

In 2013 Delhi assembly elections, the BJP won 31 seats and its ally Shiromani Akali Dal won one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party won 28 seats, and the Congress won only eight seats.
