Woman dies as smoke fills Washington subway

Washington, Jan 13 (IANS/EFE): A woman has died after a subway in the US capital filled with smoke. Two other passengers were listed in critical condition.

Sixty other people affected by the smoke were treated in hospitals, authorities said.

At about 3.20 p.m. Monday, the L'Enfant Plaza, the busiest subway station in Washington, became filled with smoke and dozens of passengers remained trapped for at least half an hour inside one of the trains.

The station was evacuated and would remain closed for some time. Services have been suspended along two subway lines in nearby stations.

The identity of the dead woman has not been disclosed.

The two passengers in critical condition were being treated at the George Washington Hospital. Forty others were taken to the Howard University Hospital and about 20 to the Washington Hospital Centre.
