Morocco concerned over escalating violence in Yemen

Rabat, Jan 13 (IANS): Morocco has "strongly" condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Yemen and noted with concern the "dangerous escalation of violence" in the Arab nation.

"Morocco strongly condemns these vile terrorist and destruction acts that can only further deteriorate the situation and undermine the positive spirit of consensus and cooperation that has enabled the conclusion of the national dialogue pact," MAP news agency quoted the foreign ministry as saying in a statement.

The ministry said these acts would only undermine the coming political events, especially the constitutional referendum and presidential and legislative elections.

At least 37 people were killed and dozens wounded Jan 7 when a car bomb exploded outside the police academy in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

On Monday, a senior regional police officer in the Yemeni province of Eb was shot dead while on his way to work.

Both attacks have been attributed to the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) terrorist group

The Moroccan foreign ministry statement said that the kingdom "follows closely and with great concern the dangerous escalation of violence" in Yemen, including the assassination of several political, military and security figures.

It urged all Yemeni forces to work together to implement the national dialogue recommendations and the initiative of the Gulf countries, and support the efforts of the UN envoy to Yemen.
