Spencer's Retail to open 12-15 stores in 2015-16

Kolkata, Jan 16 (IANS): RP Sanjiv Goenka group-owned multi-format food-first retailer Spencer's Retail Friday said it is planning to increase its pan-India presence except in the western region and will focus on hyper stores over the normal category.

"We are targeting to open at least 12 to 15 hyper stores in the next (2015-16) fiscal increasing the total retail area to 14 lakh square feet," the company's sector head Shashwat Goenka told media persons here.

"After we expand into the south, north and eastern region, we will then focus on the west," Goenka said.

The total retail area for the company pan-India is 10.5 lakh square feet and is likely to go up to 11 lakh square feet by the current fiscal.

The company will pump in investments to the tune of Rs.three crore to Rs.five crore for each of these stores.

Further, while keeping its priority on food items, the company also wants to turn its attention to the non-food sector in its retail business.

"We want to focus on the non-food category but the food items will remain a priority... 75 percent of our total business comes from the food category," he said.

Besides, the company wants to focus on procurements from West Bengal and is presently sourcing foods as well as kids' apparel items from the state.

Spencer's will also stress on growing its e-commerce business in the same product categories.

"The company has registered 18 percent growth in Kolkata in the current month," said Goenka.

It has 125 stores in 36 cities.
