Young India says 'yes' to military rule, 'no' to inter-religious mingling: Survey

Mumbai, Jan 23 (NDTV): A survey of high school and college students from 11 cities has revealed that about half of them would prefer military rule over a democracy. But perhaps what is more is that an astonishing 65 percent 'agree' that boys and girls from different religions should not mingle.

The survey also threw up other shockers. While more than half of the students surveyed believed that women 'provoke' men with the way they dress, close to half of them say women have no choice but to accept violence.

The survey, conducted by Children's Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), a Bengaluru-based NGO, covered about 10,000 high-school and college students from 11 cities across the country.

On the question of democracy, 50 per cent of the respondents preferred military rule to democracy. The same number insisted that migrants should go back 'home'.

"The state the country is in, we need an authoritative leader. We need someone who tells us what to do", said Soumitra, a student.

However, there were other who held the opposite point of view. "I am disappointed. We will be the future generation, driving the country in different fields. We have to go to our roots and eliminate these things," said Tejashri, a student at the Welingkar Institute.

The findings of the survey are symptomatic of the times, according to Manjunath Sadashiva, director of CMCA. "This shows that the youth does not have a critical appreciation of the liberties and freedom one enjoys in a democracy. It shows the cynicism and disillusionment with the political scenario, but doesn't justify the preference for an authoritarian government or military rule," he says.

"Our society is going to be further fragmented. Social tension is going to increase, and not decrease, if these youngsters are not equipped with necessary skills, attitudes and values to live in a multi-culturual democracy," Mr Sadashiva added.

High school students are not matured enough to understand what is co-living and their decisions perhaps influenced by right wing activists but if our youngsters think this what, great.. India has great future in the world. They have to name one country in the world which can say DEVELOPED which went to religious way. This is where these children has to be taught. Otherwise India will be spending all its natural resources to India united and no way for progress.

I do not think High School Students are matured enough to answer the questionair even part of College Students. Survey Conductor should asses themselves first on what kind of questions should be asked to what age group students..

Let us see why these children expressed such an opinion. Indian military is perceived to be honest so fed up with corruption news, they want a change! The basis of communalism recently is the perceived threat from "other" religion - applicable to all. Hence the reaction that let us keep it separate for all practical purposes. The idea may not be practical, but logical to some extent.

Whatever we always think of, whether good or bad, by default, we become that.
for always remembering and blaming Pakistan, our coming generation started to follow the thoughts of Pakistanis, Favoring Military rule and not mingling with inter-religious children.
we should be very careful of what our thoughts are engrossed of. Our generation was better I feel in this regard.

It can be sold at Rs.30/= per ltr. ??? this Rs.30/= going adding excise duty? Is it swiss bank accounts. Based on these parameters please explain me the differnece between CONGRESS and BJP.

the present govt has been gifhted with a empty national exchequer by prev govt
courtesy thier multi billion dollar food
security bill where money reaches middleman than poor peoples and mnrega.

yes, 30 rs is going to national exchequer due to crude oil price fall and not to modis pocket as it was not the case before as corruption money from 2g,cwg,coal scam, adarsh, land grab, tatra truck truck scam went where?

if the excess money is going to national exchequer we have no problem .but if it is going to thier own pocket which is taxpayers money then citizens are cheated.

Mr Chris, can u give breakup of the costs for arriving at Rs 31/ liter. one can concede that the benefit of reduction in crude has not been fully passed on to consumers. the government has offset the reduction by increasing the excise duty on petroleum products. be a little measured in giving the figures because the petrol cost consist of refining, freight, warehousing costs etc. which have not reduced right?

    Chris,
Didn't get the crux of my comment?
Read it again & you can make out the real meaning-
If youngsters want "Authoritarian" Rule they have very able leader who was authoritarian in Gujarath & now in India.
Rightly said about petrol price, it can be sold for Rs 30/-.
If audit is conducted when crude is cracked how many bye products are produced & how much each should cost, then certainly we can see we have been taken for a ride by Oil Companies with the connivance of Governments, as no Oil companies are in red but have huge profits every year.
If Goa can sell Petrol & diesel at Rs 50/- then why not make M Parikkar Petroleum Minister so that we all can enjoy the same with some arm twisting of states who doesn't fall in line.

Good. Send them on compulsory military training when they finish their schooling and post them on the borders of the military ruled countries and do a survey after that.
This is what happens when young brains are brain washed by religious extremists .
Funny thing is there are extremists writing in these columns will have no jobs as no one will pay them.

It's pretty surprising to read this survey results. 01st of all, we do not know what is Military Rule, students these days do not follow their own School / College Principal or Administrators' Orders, they dont listen to their parents at times n talk about " YES " to military rule.
Why is this religion based issue getting to younger minds of our society? We as students never bothered about our friends & classmate's religion, but we were together. If am a good human being, an Indian 01st, why does Religion play such importance in society? Why are we dividing our nation on religion? We do it and also happily pass it on to our children, what a pity ..!!
Let this " Religion Based Mentality should not be allowed to percolate in to our younger minds, it is as bad as any cancer is.." Let us beware of this, because our Younger Generation is our Future..

What if same thing told and practiced by other nations/countries?

Educated youngsters...please don't follow what some political leader says...Digest the reality and be good with all religion/caste/creed, but if you want, choose life partner from your own community.

india is not stranger to any system other than democracy as all the years before democracy in india ,it was all monarchy that prevailed several thousands of years by hindu kings and then dictatorship by the invaders moghuls and british untill recent last 68 years.

now democracy is prevailing in our country and also world(except china, russia and middle east).it is also the need of the times as countries cannot survive independently in todays globalised world.

in next 2 decades we never know
what system will prevail in this world and also our country when usa will be unseated from the world policeman tag and will be duly replaced by dictatorial china with backing of dictatorial russia

Religion mentality is percolating into young minds and that is a dangerous sign! Only solution is "Religion should be kept miles away from governance and politics! Religion should be restricted to private life and practice only!"
Then you see no force can touch India!! At the moment religion is doing more harm than good worldwide! Religion interference is part of the problem!!
