Modi greets citizens, EC on National Voters' Day

New Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday greeted citizens and the Election Commission on the fifth National Voters' Day.

"Greetings to my fellow citizens on National Voters' Day. I also convey greetings to ECI (Election Commission of India), which was formed on this day in 1950," Modi said.

"I urge all voters across India to make full use of this year's theme of 'Easy Registration, Easy Correction'," he added.

The prime minister congratulated "all officials and those who would be awarded today (Sunday) for their campaigns towards voter education and awareness".

"Recent elections through the years have witnessed increased turnout, especially among women and young voters. This is a wonderful sign," said Modi.

The government decided to celebrate 'National Voters' Day' from Jan 25, 2011 to encourage young voters to take part in the political process and to mark the Election Commission's foundation day.
