Kundapur, Jan 27: Machchattu in Amasebaill in the taluk stood witness to a rare event on Monday January 26. Besides Republic Day, the rural folk witnessed marriage of a groom from USA with a girl born to parents of Indian origin, but was born and brought up in USA. The marriage was conducted as per Hindu tradition in rural setting.

The marriage of Chetana, granddaughter of veteran statesman, former MLA and chairman of third state finance commission, A G Kodgi, was conducted at Kodgi's home.The wedding was organized here because of interest evinced by Chetana, who is immensely interested in Indian culture.

Kodgi's daughter, Shashi Biliyar, settled in USA after marrying Dr Vedavyas Biliyar. Shashi's daughter, Chetana, chose Kevin Wilkins from USA as her life partner. She explained to Kevin about the grand Indian weddings and various rituals connected thereto, after which he was convinced that entering into wedlock as per Indian customs was the best bet.His family supported his decision.

At the wedding held at Machchattu, Kevin, son of Ryan and Rita Wilkins, married Chetana under the guidance of Vedic scholars in the presence of relatives and friends. Kevin took oath as per Hindu custom, duly accepting Fire God as witness, went around the fire seven times, tied Karimani around Chetana's neck, and accepted her as his wife. Even parents of the groom wore Indian style clothes for the wedding.

Former chief minister of Karnataka, B S Yeddyurappa, Udupi district in-charge minister, Vinay Kumar Sorake, legislators, Halady Srinivas Shetty, K Pratapchandra Shetty, and Kota Srinivas Poojary, former MP, Manorama Madhwaraj, well-known vocalist, Vidyabhushana, entrepreneur, Dr G Shankar, and many other dignitaries graced the occasion.

    The wedding was organized here because of interest evinced by Chetana, who is immensely interested in Indian culture. - Is she not indian??? she could as well had an american name cheryl!These days this is new fad...what is the use of this tamasha when he is american and anyway they r following yankee culture there?If he is converting for "Ghar vaapsi" then fine.

    No offence meant and best wishes to the newly-wed. Agreed that my previous comment was blunt and bit harsh but was just my personal opinion which flashed to my mind when i first read this.(its their wish and their money whichever way they want to marry and none of my biz).
