Udupi, Jan 2: The New Year Awards 2007 were presented to general secretary of AICC Margaret Alva and Lokayukta Justice N Santhosh Hegde at a programme held at Hotel Valley View here on Monday January 1.

Managing director of the Century Building Industries Pvt Ltd, Bangalore P Dayanand Pai and president of the Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi N R Shetty were also presented with the award.

The award has been instituted by the Academy of General Education, Syndicate Bank and the Rotary Club here.

Speaking on the occasion, Alva said that the education system in the country should be more service oriented so that the youth are not lured by money alone. She stressed on rural development, growth of industries and pro-human development as the key factors that can solve problems faced by the country.

Lokayukta Justice Santhosh Hegde also spoke on the occasion. Among those present were Academy of General Education Manipal registrar K K Pai and Rotary district governor Sadanand Chatra.
