Mangalore, Jan 2: A gallery provides an artist with a launch-pad and acts as catalyst between the artist and the buyers, said Peter Lewis, well known artist and former president of Lalitkala Academy of Karataka. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of Orchid Art Gallery in City Gate at Nantur uphill here.

'Society will be at peace if it diverts its energy towards the pursuits of art,’ said Karnataka high court's retired judge Justice Michael Saldanha, who presided over the function.

Fr John Fernandes, professor and head of Chair in Christianity at Mangalore University, Gurudutt Kamath and Dr Michael Lobo also spoke on the occasion.

William Pais, the promoter of the Gallery, said the purpose of the gallery is to provide a platform to the local artists and thus make culturally vibrant city of Mangalore even richer.

Besides allowing artists to display their output, the Gallery will have paintings on sale and provide framing service for pictures, paintings and display material.

Incidentally, William Pais is the co-author of the glossy publication 'The Land Called South Kanara', with photographs by Vincent Mendonca.
