Kundapur, Jan 4: Kandlur and surrounding areas which witnessed several incidents of violence in the last couple of days are now gradually limping back to normalcy from Wednesday January 3 night.

As reported earlier, Kandlur, Navunda, Kirimanjeshwar and other areas which witnessed stone pelting and other incidents of violence from January 1 are now peaceful.  However, the situation is still tensed and additional police personnel have been deployed.

Despite peace in the vicinity, many of the people and vehicles wished to remain indoors even on Thursday January 4 morning.  Meanwhile a few incidents of stone pelting have been reported from the city too. But the police managed to control the situation in Gangolli, Kodi and other areas with the assistance of additional forces.

Udupi SP Dr Subrahmaneshwar Rao visited Kandlur on Wednesday.  A KSRP battalion has been deployed at Kandlur as precautionary measure.  Kundapur CI Valentine D'Souza and top police personnel are looking after the law and order system.

The problem had erupted on New Year day after 3 young men of a minority community from Kandlur were assaulted by a group.  As soon as the news of this assault spread, people got on to the street and started pelting stones at buses, shops etc in the surrounding areas.  Sensing that the situation was going out of their hand, police had immediately summoned additional forces and had managed to control the situation.  But violence had by then spread to rural areas which resulted in confusion and commotion.
