Mangalore, Jan 5: Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao on Friday January 5 assured that all petty shops, parking slots that have been blocking free walking on footpaths will soon be vacated with the help of police and Mangalore Municipal Corporation.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of 18th Road Safety Week at Police Guest House here on Friday morning.  He stated that owing to these illegal occupants on footpaths, the accident ratio has considerably increased in the last few years.

District session court judge H M Bharatesh who inaugurated the Road Safety Week said that using mobile phones while driving has been a major cause of accidents along with driving under the influence of alcohol.  "It is quite advisable that those who are addicted should not be issued driving license and if some of them already have one, then those licences should be cancelled," he added.

RTO Ramesh, SP B Dayananda, Canara Bus Operators Association president Rajavarma Ballal, noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr Shantharam Shetty were also present on the occasion.
