Bihar CM meets Modi, Nitish-led JD-U to parade MLAs

Patna, Feb 8 (IANS): The crisis in Bihar's ruling JD-U deepened further Sunday with Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his rival camp led by Nitish Kumar deciding to parade legislators at the Raj Bhavan Monday to stake claim to power.

Manjhi, hand-picked by Nitish Kumar as his replacement last year after the Lok Sabha polls, has refused to quit. On Saturday he left for New Delhi to attend the NITI Ayog meeting Sunday. He then called on Modi.

Janata Dal-United Bihar president Vashsisht Narain Singh told IANS that his party would form a new government in the state under Nitish Kumar's leadership with the backing of the Congress and Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal.

"We will parade 130 MLAs, including those of the Congress and RJD, before the governor Monday," he said.

The JD-U has 115 legislators in the 243-member assembly, most of whom are reportedly with Nitish Kumar.

It is backed by 24 legislators of the RJD, five of the Congress, one from the CPI and two independents, making it a total of 147 -- more than the 122 needed for a simple majority.

Manjhi enjoys the support of over a dozen JD-U legislators. He is banking on the support of the BJP, which has openly come out in his favour. The BJP has 88 legislators and it supported by three independents.

Earlier, the JD-U submitted letters of support to Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi staking claim to form the government, one day after Nitish Kumar was re-elected as the legislature party leader.

Singh said RJD's Abdul Bari Siddiqui and Congress' Sadanand Singh also submitted letters of support for Nitish Kumar to the governor.

"We have staked claim to form the next government," Sadanand Singh told the media. "There is a list of over 130 legislators out of the 243 in support of Nitish Kumar."

Sadanand Singh said the governor should invite Nitish Kumar to form the government. "Any delay to invite Nitish Kumar will encourage horse-trading."

Tripathi is currently in Kolkata as he is also the West Bengal governor. He is likely to arrive here late Sunday or Monday, officials said.

Meanwhile, JD-U leader launched fierce attacks on Manjhi, accusing him of playing into the hands of the BJP to harm the party ahead of assembly elections later this year.

"The BJP is behind whatever Manjhi is doing," JD-U national general secretary K.C. Tyagi said.

Added Vashsisht Narain Singh: "The BJP is taking advantage of Manjhi's lust for power."

Manjhi has refused to resign despite requests from Nitish Kumar and the JD-U to make way for the return of Nitish Kumar.

Beleaguered Bihar CM Manjhi set to meet Modi

New Delhi, Feb 8, (PTI) : Beleaguered Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi here in the evening today with the two expected to discuss the political situation in the state where an overwhelming majority of ruling JD(U) MLAs yesterday chose Nitish Kumar as their party leader.

Sources close to Manjhi, who has refused to step down and termed the JD(U) Legislature Party meet yesterday "unconstitutional", said he wanted BJP to support his bid to prevent Kumar -- his one-time mentor against whom he has rebelled -- from taking over from him.

At the meeting, which is scheduled to be held at 5 P.M., Manjhi and Modi could explore possibilities in this regard, they added.

Manjhi is here to attend the NITI Aayog meet where Modi will seek views of chief ministers on the budgetary allocation for the states and various central projects even though JD(U) has disapproved of his bid to take part in the exercise, saying his position as chief minister was no longer tenable.

Although BJP is keen to exploit the crisis within JD(U) to consolidate its position in Bihar, it is also wary about propping up Manjhi, whose tenure has been criticised by its state unit for poor governance.

The lack of support for the Mahadalit leader within his own party is also dissuading BJP from coming out openly to back Manjhi as it believes that numbers in the Bihar Assembly clearly favour Kumar.

Manjhi, on the other hand, is also exploring the possibility of a fresh election in the state -- a demand also made by senior Bihar BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi -- if the Bihar Governor Kesrinath Tripathi agrees to his Cabinet proposal to dissolve the Assembly.
Only seven members of the Manjhi Cabinet had supported the proposal at their meeting yesterday while 21 others had opposed it.

Later, 97 of JD(U)'s 111 MLAs met to replace Manjhi with Kumar as their new leader, underlining the lack of support for the chief minister within his own party.

Modi is PM of India, what has he got to do with with sacked Bihar CM Manjhi for anti party activities?
Are they planning horse trading before elections there?

I swear I am not a supporter of BJP :) Even if I was in your shoe , with the fantastic performance of the Scamgres in National election & assembly election, even I would not have had the face to proudly say " I am a supporter of congress ". I would have played your tune as well. Anyways life goes on for us, congress or BJP...what say!

this Delhi election should be an eye opener for both congress and BJP, mainly Congress you know why?

TOI Delhi edition today has a news that in Delhi Muslims voted tactically 100% for AAP to prevent their votes being split between "Secular" parties so as to ensure the defeat of BJP since in LS polls BJP could win all 7 seats of Delhi as Muslim votes had got split between Congress and AAP.
Power of Unity always shown by them to defeat BJP by all means . ..

So, dont start appeasing minorities unnecessarily! there is nothing like secularism.. Hindus should vote as block! and all religions should vote like block and should keep changing their options each time!.. Like AAP is alternative for muslims now.. ! tomorrow if OWaisi contests the same space, he will walk away with all the votes of muslims!...

if at all it is warning bell for Siddaramaih.. dont assume that they will vote for you, loking at your shaadi bhagya.. next election, even Owaisi will fight in karnataka and so is AAP! :) Make sure, you do the work for Majority too!

In any case, Amit Shah should not take his volunteers lightly! This time Baba Ramdev, Sri Sri s soldiers, RSS didnt work much - THEY ARE YOUR STRENGTH! dont ignore them! they unite Hindus! ... Do listen to Swamy once in a while. he has much hold on youth, than you can think of! Understand oppositions game "church attack, pub attack, home stay attack- just before a crucial elections by opposition will make youth walk away from the voting"! there are lessons in this election, even if you have lost by design, I hate losses! Analyse this, few heads may need to roll.. Though, I wont go by current exit poll and you will do much better than the numbers shown, but I know delhi is lost and Kejri will form the govt! :)

Congress as 3rd or 4th player in each state , that too single digit in some of them is as same as congress Mukth (true you cannot totally control cockroaches, you only reduce their menace). You may like it or not like it, in Bihar next congress furture is at the mercy of JDU RJD . So they decide how much seats for your party if it wants to fix their Trolley in Janatha Partys lolley to fight BJP. In Delhi Congress's growth anymore will be at AAPS decline/cost & vice versa. So everywhere the main party is BJP, rest all Changu mangu party alliance. BJP may come first in some, second in some against alliance but not single party, but not 3rd 4th or 5th unike your party.

Even I am bit concerned about the over ambitions of BJP in recent days & I guess Delhi will be the best reminder for them to come back to earth & to set their things in order once again & for the rest...nature will take care.

With expected to win maximum of 5 seats(from 8), calling us defeated ! ROFL. We are on 2 mission, One is congress Mukt which is main, next is MODI as PM. Modi as PM is over, next 5 years no matter howmuchever fekugiri you do, you only have to cry sour grapes, next is Congress free country (congress as 3rd or 4th player in all the states) which looks on track, most of the time in would be BJP who would lead this, with some exception like regional party in some states, we will be satisfied with 2nd also.
