One killed in Kashmir avalanche


Srinagar, Feb 11 (IANS): One person was killed in an avalanche in Kongdoori heights near north Kashmir's Gulmarg ski resort Wednesday.

Police said the man, identified as Bashir Ahmad and belonging to Tangmarg area in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, was killed in an avalanche Wednesday.

"One local identified as Bashir Ahmad belonging to Tangmarg (Baramulla) was killed in Kongdoori mountains today (Wednesday) when he was hit by an avalanche."

"Rescue teams have rushed to the avalanche site to ensure there are no missing persons," a senior police officer told IANS in the summer capital Srinagar.

Authorities regularly issue avalanche warnings for the residents of mountainous areas in Jammu and Kashmir during the winter months.

Kongdoori heights, situated 14,000 feet above sea level, are ideal ski slopes connected with the world famous Gulmarg ski resort by a cable car.
