Policeman shot dead in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, Feb 14 (IANS): A Government Reserve Police (GRP) constable was shot dead by unidentified miscreants late Friday night in Aligarh, police said Saturday.

He was shot twice in the chest, a district officer said, adding that an FIR had been lodged against the attackers, who also robbed the service revolver of the policeman before fleeing from the scene of the crime.

The victim was identified as 46-year-old Suresh Babu, hailing from Etah and posted as gunner of the railway magistrate at Aligarh.

He was standing outside a tea stall outside the Aligarh railway station Friday night when two bike-borne miscreants overpowered him. They tried to snatch his revolver.

In the scuffle that followed, the miscreants shot the policeman twice and then fled.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) J. Ravindra Gaur said the policeman died on his way to a medical facility. He told IANS that police had come across CCTV footage, where images of both assailants has been captured.

"We are trying to get to the bottom of the case but no motive has emerged so far," he said.
