Karachi, Jan 17: Former Pakistan cricket captain Moin Khan was briefly arrested in Karachi after his wife told police that he was drunk and beating her, police said on Wednesday.

Khan, 36, was arrested at his home in the Clifton neighborhood of Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province before dawn on Tuesday. He was later freed on bail, said Azad Khan, an area police chief.

"We arrested him after his wife contacted police, saying her husband was drunk and beating her," he said.

Khan yelled at the police officers as they tried to arrest him, Azad said, adding that police produced Khan before a judge, who granted him bail.

According to Pakistan's largest circulation English-language newspaper The News, Khan did not return home after the incident, and instead sent a friend to collect his clothes and other belongings.

His wife Tasnim Khan alleged to the newspaper that her husband often used to beat her.

"I am not at fault and, honestly, I don't care if he returns or not," she said, adding that she would eventually seek a divorce.

Moin Khan was not available for comment.

Khan, a wicketkeeper and a shining batsman, made his international debut against the West Indies in 1990-91, and was associated with the national team for more than 10 years.
