Aam Aadmi Party government orders cut in power tariff, ban on demolitions

New Delhi, Feb 17 (Agencies) : On the first working day of his government, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet ordered steps to be taken towards the party’s poll promise of cheaper electricity and water and ordered a status quo on proposed demolitions of slums or residential premises.

Following the first cabinet meeting, the Delhi government directed the departments of finance and power to “immediately send their proposals for implementation of the election promises to slash electricity tariffs by 50 per cent till the audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General of the private power companies (discoms) is completed, and also on the provision of lifeline water (up to 20,000 litres for every household per month)”.

In another decision, directions were issued to various government agencies to not carry out any demolitions of residential premises and slums. The government stated that it was taking a “holistic view” on the existing policy of carrying out demolitions of residential premises and jhuggis and that no agency must carry out any demolition until the policy review is completed.

The directions were issued to agencies including the New Delhi Municipal Council, East, South and North municipal corporations, Delhi Jal Board, environment and forests department and the revenue department. “In case any demolition has already been planned or are in the pipeline, the agency concerned shall seek prior approval of the urban development minister,” the government directed. The urban development portfolio has been assigned to deputy CM Manish Sisodia.

The government, however, clarified that its order shall not apply to action taken in pursuance to a court order.

The Delhi government also announced that the cabinet had decided to recommend the first session of the newly elected Delhi Assembly on February 23 and 24 for the swearing-in of MLAs and election of the speaker and his deputy.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s home minister, Jitender Singh Tomar, said he would soon begin work with the Home Guard to ensure the AAP promise of setting up the Mahila Suraksha Dal — a women’s security force made up of a 10,000 home guards who currently work as help at the residence of senior officers and ministers.

AAP will also deploy 5,000 bus marshals to prevent and deter crime on public transport. A senior official said that posting of home guards on buses is likely to be discussed in the subsequent meetings with the minister.

Delhi has a total of 5,500 home guards and approximately 2,500 are on extension beyond five years. Home Guards chief J K Sharma said the department will need to recruit home personnel if they need to be deployed for women’s security. “In February next year around 25,00 home guards will be due for retirement,” he said.

jossey... open your eyes & see..

i bet you... challange... this 50% reduction in electricity bill will not sustain for more than 3-4months....

you please note down the date 17-02-2015, am mr kumar from mangalore is writing to jossey, this electrocity tariff for delhi will not sustain.....

there will be two possibilities after 10-111 months ( i mean to say, not even one full year!!)

    1.) kejriwal will run away
2.) or delhi govt will bankrupt & ask for bailout from central govt.

of course, blame on modi will be there.

other possibility is AAPian quarrel each other & presidents rule will be imposed on delhi before 14-02-2017.note down jossey...

let me make it clear, I AM NOT MODI FAN OR BJP SUPPORTER. I was active congress member till "shadi bhagya" was announced. i did not vote for anyone after that.

AAP decision on giving electricity 50% rate at this point is not an good idea. It will collapse delhi financially. People will be happy, deffinetly even I will be happy if I get the electricity 50%. Need to think on long term too. He need to wait and do the audit and on that basis he has to reduce the rate. Not by subsidy. Just they are fulfilling the manifesto and resign after, that will not work for the best interest of any State.

Slashing electricity bills to the tune of 50% is a bit too much unless the Govt is capable of generating revenue in some other means to bridge the gap! This idea is similar to subsidised cooking gas!

Reducing 50 Percent in electric tariff is not alright.

People will use electricity only instead of gas.

People are also shrewd in utilizing gas or electricity.

If electricity is cheaper than gas people will use electricity relentlessly as the farmers run their pump sets relentlessly because there is electricity cheap.

Furthermore consumption of electricity will be more.

Presently they cannot cope with electricity demand and supply.

    Ban on demolition of slums.
AAP has basic idilogy of communist party. Several Naxalites are in the inner core of the party.Maintainin slum is a vote bank policy. He will not bring any progress to state. He will convert Delhi to a biggest slum in the world so that he can remain in power.
Nothing comes free in this world. The electricity subsidy will cause Rs 1600 budget deficit for Delhi state. The NDA government has to sanction freebies to Delhi.
AK will sure to ruain the state.

very good step!.. specially stopping demolotion of the slums/juggi-jhopdis in these posh delhi locations!... it is like DRISHTI BOTTU to the looks of Delhi city!.. it gives hope to many encroachers that, you can grab land and govt wont demolish your property! Mainly, this slum redevelopment program has failed here in Mumbai too!.... you allot these slum guys a house at badlapur or distant place.. these people promptly go and put that place to rent and start living in new area over the footpath! vhe vhe vhe... so real purpose is never served! so, let them live there.... and save the money of those new houses!

And specailly since, Modi has now decided to meet the world leaders in Ahmedabad, and Varanasi after air lifriting them from Delhi, I really dont care, beautifying Delhi is required!.. all world leaders, will just visit Rajghat and Rashtrapati bhavan in delhi!... But a slum is more important in India's culture that, else people will never imagine what is SLUMDOG MILLIANAIRE background! ..vhe vhe vhe

good, delhi deserves these people! .make them stick in Delhi for 5 years..!
