UN chief to attend White House summit

United Nations, Feb 18 (IANS): UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon would be in Washington DC Thursday to attend the Summit on Countering Violent Extremism, hosted by the US, Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, announced here.

"He is expected to address high-level delegates gathered at the Summit on ways in which the international community can address the threat of violent extremism, including through a comprehensive multi-faceted approach," Haq said Tuesday at a daily news briefing here, Xinhua reported.

The White House would host the summit on the heels of another wave of violent attacks in Egypt and Denmark. The summit would span three days.

Most members of the international community called on the UN to play a central role in the fight against terrorism on the basis of the UN Charter and international law.
