Rs 1.21 cr bid for Modi's controversial bandhgala suit

Updated

Surat, Feb 18 (PTI): A Surat-based textile businessmen bid a whopping Rs 1.21 crore in an auction today for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial pinstripe monogrammed bandhgala suit that he wore during US President Barack Obama's visit to India last month.

Rajesh Juneja gave a written bid offering Rs.1.21 crore for Modi's navy blue suit which was the star attraction at the three-day auction which opened today.

Earlier, NRI businessmen Viral Chowksi offered Rs 1.11 crore, while before him textile trader Suresh Aggarwal made an offer of Rs one crore for the two-piece suit.

The first bid was made for Rs 11 lakh by a Surat-based chartered accountant Pankaj, while few minutes later, second bid of Rs 51 lakh was made by Raju Agarwal, an estate dealer.

"I have offered Rs.one crore. This is work of charity and when the Prime Minister is doing for a great cause like cleaning of Ganga, I decided to go ahead and buy the suit," said Suresh Aggarwal.

Giving a new dimension to the controversy, NRI Gujarati businessman Ramesh B Virani, who had participated in the Gujarat Vibrant Summit, said he had gifted the suit to Modi when had he gone to invite the Prime Minister for his son's wedding.

"At that time, he (Modi) told me that he has a very busy schedule ahead and also that he will be donating the suit. I said there is no problem with that. I told him that I want him to wear the suit on the day of my son's wedding as a blessing," he said.

The suit that created waves and kicked up a political storm was put for auction along with 455 items that Modi had received as gifts during his nearly nine-month long tenure to generate funds for the Prime Minister's ambitious 'Clean Ganga Mission'.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi's suit, that he wore during his meeting with President Barack Obama last month, along with other 455 items that he received as gifts during his tenure as Prime Minister is being auctioned at the three-day event," Surat Municipal Commissioner Milind Toravane told PTI.

The gift items belonging to Prime Minister Modi is a national treasure and the money generated from the auction will be utilised for the 'Clean Ganga Mission', he added.

The event was organised at SMC's Science Convention Centre at city-lights road in Surat as the Prime Minister's Office(PMO) had decided to hold the auction in the city.

Modi during his chief ministerial tenure in Gujarat had initiated a trend to auction the gifts that he received in a year and it was donated to Kanya Kelavani Yojna for girl child education, he said.

Modi was photographed wearing the suit during his summit talks with Obama in Hyderabad House in Delhi on January 25 and at a joint media appearance that followed the meeting.

Photographs of the suit on a closer inspection showed that the stripes were actually tiny letters spelling out his name in full-- Narendra Damodardas Modi--and embroidered on the fabric vertically down the stripe.

The suit had triggered a debate in social media while the Prime Minister was slammed by his political opponents for wearing an expensive suit. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called Modi a "megalomaniac".

Toravane said no base price has been fixed for any of the items to come under the hammer.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi also had raked up the issue of Modi's expensive suit during the campaign for Delhi assembly polls in which BJP was routed. Some reports said the suit cost nearly Rs 10 lakh.

Discussions on whether the suit, which from a distance appeared to be a classic navy blue pinstripe design, was fine style and good form or a thinly-disguised show of narcissism coursed through social media, even attracting global media attention.

Tweets flew thick and fast, including comparison with former Egypt President Hosni Mubarak who is known to have a similar outfit.

Congress leader Ajay Maken said the auction was a "damage control" exercise by the Prime Minister who was "widely criticised" for donning such a suit.

"The PM made a mockery of the poor by wearing a suit like this...It showed how egotistic this person is," he said.

"First, how can such an expensive gift be called a private gift? What exactly in return does the person gifting this expect? Secondly, there are rules and norms laid down in the statute over how gifts are to be disposed off. The Prime Minister cannot decide to just auction off the gift, nor can he decide where the proceeds of the auctions may be given. The statute states that the amount must go down to the government depository," he said.

At the end of three days, the highest bidder will take away the navy blue suit. The suit was tailored by Jade Blue in Ahmedabad, the clothing chain that handles the Prime Minister's wardrobe. Surat City Collector Rajendra Kumar said the bidding will be closed on February 20 at 5 pm.

Modi receives a suit costing 10 lakhs as gift. He auctions the suit and abuyer buys it for 1 crore. Till here the story looks fine.
But the problem is that there is a potential for the donor and the buyer to seek undue favours at cost of tax payers.

Foreign media on Modi success ' China's economy is slowing, Brazil is struggling as commodity prices plunge. Russia, facing Western sanctions and weak oil revenue, is headed into a recession. As other big developing markets stumble, India under MODI is emerging as one of the few hopes for global growth.
The stock market and rupee are surging. Multinational companies are looking to expand their Indian operations or start new ones. The growth in India's economy, long a laggard, just matched China's pace in recent months...jai HO..

Modi is into more drama so that he can keep his bhakths happy and fool general public. India needs a PM of modest and humble nature because this country is full of poor people who gave emotional support to modi in last election. Even Modi exploited people claiming his Chaiwala background. When one wears a suite (whether it is gift or from tax payers money) with self named golden stripe whatever the cost ,this only shows his megalomaniac nature. I think rise of AAP and common man turning against bjp are something to do with PM style of functioning and his policies.

The supporters of the 5th std educated Italian Waitress Antanio Maino Khan & her no good son hyped it negatively. This suit was not bought by tax payers money but gifted. One should ask Raul Vinci Khan how much did his mom spend on the US trips she undertook for medical reasons when the KHANgress was ruling with tax payers money. These pathans have screxed India and their supporters have shamelessly joined the AAP bandwagon. Ungrateful bunch .

When tax payers' money was spent on security for Robber Wadra, no one had any complaints. When Sonia Gandhi wore the high quality cotton sarees( which surely cost a bomb) and used only Pashmina shawls no one cared. But now people want to make an issue out of a total non issue. Modi is at least contributing from his side for some of the projects unlike his predecessors who gobbled up the funds set aside for the development of the nation. Its very sad to see the comments on Modi and some of his colleagues ridiculing them of their humble background. If Rajnikant is appreciated as an actor par excellence despite his past as a bus conductor then why ridicule the others. If one is not born into riches that doesnt mean they cant dream big.

By 11.15am today the Bidding is crossed 51 lacs in Surat. Thanks for the Modi bashers and News Traders for contributing Namami Gange Foudation. This story about 10 Lac rupees suit that Modiji wore is totally false and spread during election time by his political opponents to tarnish his image. The suit was a gift given to him by Jade Blue clothing store in Ahemdabad This is the same store where Modi gets his all Kurtas stitched. Modi has given the 'Modi Kurta' trademark ownership to Jade Blue. In his appreciation the owner of the store has stitched this special suit for Modi to wear on special occasions of his own choice. So what is wrong if he presents himself in decent dress in front of the world media accompanying USA President?

Stitching cost of the suit was only rupees 7000. Times of India gave the cost of the suit as rupees 10,000 and apologized for propagating a lie. TOI was at the fore front in spreading this lie and still people keep on repeating this lie like Goebbels. The truth has to be told.Pls refer Google or TOI sites for the apology by TOI.

Wow... What a farce ??? A Prime Minister gets a suit done with his name monogrammed on it, is auctioning the suit - for what purpose ? For cleaning Ganga. Setting an example ? Who will purchase it ? Will Obama ? Will China ? No ! Some fools from India will purchase it ! Will they pay by cheque ? Cash (black money of-course) ? Its irrelevant as long as the garment is auctioned !

Well, where did the revenue, (whatever numbers of lakh it may be), come from to get the suit done at the first place ? From taxpayers money. Now, isn't it draining the exchequer for one particular religion's uplift ?

How is this ? Let me explain you - people visit Ganga - for what ? Bathing. Why do they bathe in Ganga ? To be eligible to worship in any temple located on the bank. Do they stop at just bathing ? No, they urinate, defecate and do all else in or around the river which eventually get washed up into the river. Not to mention burning their dead on the the banks and throwing half-burnt bodies in the river because they can't afford entire lot of the wood that is required to bur the body completely. Why is this again ? Its auspicious to be dead in the holy place. Not also to mention all the flowers or other objects used for rituals need to be discarded - lets move on.

Tell me - for who is Modi government come to power ? Please.. please ? Sab ke saath sab ka vikaas ? Never - it came to power to drain the economy and uplift just one community. Correct me if I am wrong !

Well, when you knew that the suit is not of use any time after Obama's visit, why you go for such an expensive suit anyway ? Now you are being exemplary ? Should all Indians follow you ? Eh ?

    Lydia bai
Don’t view every thing in communal angle Lydia. Lets think like this, If a Suit that is alleged to cost 9 lakh, fetches 50 lakhs for whatever purpose, it’s a good deal. The math goes like this. 9 lakh of tax payers money spent, 50 lakh of black money comes out to the market in the purpose of buying it. Otherwise this 50 lakhs would have been hidden in a undergournd or attic in some baniyas house or at tax free heaven. Now this money is recorded and should be used for some use. Or we never know, Modi may buy something for 50 Lakhs , may be Watch this time with his face on it, Modi haters will cry foul for some time, and then he will auction it for 1.5 crore. Still Munaafa!

Modi takes away 9 lakhs of taxpayers money and within 60 days he uses the same money to convert minimum 50 lakh Black money into white to circulate it in the market or should I say back to a tax payer ? More than 500% bonus, in 2 months, even I would blindly invest in such a scheme. Tell me any investment in India which give such a good returns in such a short time. Not all can come up with such ideas, Gujjus can. What did Pappu gain by racking this up in his campaign ? could not even win one seat but made Modi’s suit so famous, that our friend from Bannur also using it in his pyramids.

Regarding Ganga, I can understand your communal point of view, but again, Cleaning of Ganga is not important only for Holy/hindu/mythology/varnasi/temple etc. Ganga is a life line for more of those other “community” people you are referring to also, may be for drinking, water, irrigation, agriculture, industry, pharmaceuticals. Ganga is not used only by your one “community” people. Cleaner ganga is essential for all communities.. What say, you are free to correct me if am wrong.

Its a shame that gifts are getting auctioned. Govt should its money for cleaning of Ganga rather than money generated from auction.
