Uttar Pradesh juvenile reform centres to have CCTVs

Lucknow, Feb 19 (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered installation of CCTV cameras in all juvenile shelter and reform homes across the state, an official said Thursday.

The development comes in the wake of recent incidents in some parts of the state where inmates escaped or indulged in violence.

A few days back a juvenile, serving a reform period, not only escaped but also brutally shot dead a known criminal in front of a judge in a western UP court. Two major escapes have taken place recently in Meerut and Jaunpur.

The CCTVs are also being extended to the 69 homes meant for girls booked under the Immoral Trafficking Act and overseen by the women welfare department.

Officials told IANS that another reason was complaints of inmates being subjected to torture and physical abuse.
