Bihar CM Manjhi resigns ahead of trust vote, claims threat to life

Patna, Feb 20 (IANS): Embattled Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi Friday dramatically resigned just ahead of a floor test, the move coming despite the BJP extending support to him.

Manjhi said that he did not get respect as chief minister.

"I have submitted my resignation letter to the governor. I should have quit before," said Manjhi soon after he met Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi here Friday.

He claimed that he as well as some legislators had received threats to their lives.

An official told IANS that Manjhi met the governor ahead of a trust vote he faced later in the day.

Manjhi was picked by former chief minister and JD-U leader Nitish Kumar as his replacement when he quit last year after JD-U's rout in the Lok Sabha polls.

In the 243-member assembly, the JD-U has 115 legislators - most of whom are with Nitish Kumar. The party has the support of 24 Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislators, five Congress MLAs, two Independents and a CPI MLA.

The BJP has 88 legislators and is supported by three Independents.

Nitish Kumar was quick to react on Manjhi's resignation and said: "Our stand has been vindicated."

He told reporters that the "BJP game plan has been exposed".

Manjhi said that he had requested Governor Tripathi to hold a secret ballot and "in that case, I would have had the support of 40-50 JD-U legislators".

But, since "I realised that secret ballot may not happen, a lot of legislators would have lost their membership if it would have been known that they had voted for me, that's why I decided to quit".

Manjhi maintained that "quite a few MLAs had met him in the night and pledged support to him".

He accused JD-U of "horse-trading", an euphemism for driving a hard bargain to ensure adequate numbers in a floor test.

On Thursday, BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said that the BJP decided to support Manjhi during the confidence vote in the assembly Friday.

"After a long meeting of the BJP legislators, the party has decided to support Manjhi during his confidence vote in the assembly," Modi had said.

JD-U spokesperson K.C. Tyagi Friday told IANS that Janata Dal-United (JD-U) has the majority in Bihar and the "governor will call Nitish Kumar by today evening or latest by tomorrow to prove his majority".

The fast paced political development took place a day after Speaker Uday Narain Choudhary notified JD-U leader Vijay Kumar Chaudhary as leader of opposition, replacing Nand Kishore Yadav of the BJP which will support Manjhi during the confidence vote.

The speaker accepted Nitish Kumar's demand that JD-U be given the status of the main opposition party.

Manjhi, after being expelled from the JD-U Feb 9, has been declared as an unattached member in the assembly. He was expelled for allegedly "indulging in anti-party activities".

Nitish won the last election with tie up with BJP and he ditched them.
Nitish tied up with Lalu and Congress
Majhi's only qualification for CM was that he was perceived as harmless. (Dalit angle is just an excuse). He started dreaming about continuing as CM.
The same way Congress and Lalu supported Nitish, BJP appeared to be supporting Majhi to spite Nitish.
However Majhi's bad admin record means, it would have boomranged on BJP!

Prakash Jha (a Bihari himself) often get inspiration to make movies like Rajaneeti from his home state!

Remember, Vajpayee's 13 day government! even a scchool going kid would know it was a minority government, will never get support! (or for that matter even Kejriwal's 49 day government with just 28 seats).. but he went down as a martyr and tendered resignation before the test!... People still remember that speech and people do remember tow things, "SYmpathy garnering speeches and martyrdom AND sex scandals"! so, that paved way for BJP's rise and got good majority later and today is able to form govt on its own! Jithan Manjhi has done wonderful help to BJP here! vhe vhe vhe

LOL... Jithan ram manjhi, everyone thought is a lame duck used by Nitish Kumar! But what a master stroke this man had.. he was to go down, in case of battle as SHAHEED! but he learnt politricks ropes, quickly! he got martyrdom, sympathy and also finished Nitish Kumar! .... his recommendation for dissolution is important! How Governor will deal with this is interesting.. only few months left, so to avoid all horse trading, he may opt for president's rule!...

but interesting is downfall of Nitish Kumar!... He wanted to be PM, opinion polls were giving him hopes! so he quit as CM and made rubberstamp Manjhi as CM!.. NiKu got thenga, Manjhi learnt netagiri well.. went and had good meeting with PM and center ans started bargaining for Bihar! NiKU couldnt handle the admiration for Manjhi!... joined RJD and all sundry! wanted to be back as CM... olpa PM, odeg CM kooda! .. Speaker made him a OPPOSITION leader! LOL... within a year, PM to CM hopeful to LoP.. and now this!... BJP as usual smartly played "for Mahadalit card"! even Yadav, and Kurmi will now support BJP along with its tradiotional upper caste votes! ... Lalu and NiKU will have to do with Muslim votes and few caste votes! and in case if AAP decides to contest, be ready to lose even deposits! vhe vhe vhe

Manjhi issue is an internal problem of JD(U), Nitesh made him CM when Modi won as PM & Nitisjh had to bite dust with 2 seats. Now Nitish wants to be CM back as they see an opportunity to rule Bihar with other OPPORTUNISTS!

BJP supported Manjhi only because he is a MahaDalit...Else they had nothing to do, leave alone horsetrading as BJP bashers will allege.
