Helsinki, Feb 20 (IANS): Finnish President Sauli Niinisto Friday signed and confirmed a law that makes same-sex marriages legal in Finland, media reported.
The law will go into effect March 1, 2017.
Now that the law has been confirmed by the president, the Finnish ministry of justice would start amending other national legislations, Xinhua news agency reported citing Finnish national broadcaster Yle.
The broadcaster also said that a variety of social and health entitlements needed to be re-examined, as the law would endow legal status to same-sex couples.
The Finnish parliament approved the same-sex marriage bill last November, making Finland the last Nordic country to legalise such marriages.
