Modi seeks humble, tolerant new image after poll rout

NEW DELHI, Feb 20, (Reuters): It's out with the flashy suit, in with religious tolerance for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is seeking to soften his image after an electoral pounding in New Delhi and grumblings in his party about his top-down leadership style.

Abruptly ending a string of national and regional election victories, Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was thrashed in the capital this month, a defeat many blamed on a perception that Modi was tacitly fanning Hindu extremists.

"The Delhi election results ended the party's honeymoon period with a jolt," a senior BJP leader in New Delhi said, asking not be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

"If we don't start the damage control and make immediate corrections, defeat in other state elections is imminent."
In the space of a week, Modi, a Hindu nationalist who rarely attends events organised by religious minorities, delivered a long-awaited speech about inter-faith tolerance to a Christian congregation.

Leaders of the hardline Hindu group Vishwa Hindu Parishad associated with the BJP have cautioned members across India against making comments that "hurt Narendra Modi's image".

A saint-like bust of the prime minister was removed from a temple in his home state of Gujarat after he tweeted his disapproval, and a designer suit he wore to meet U.S. President Barack Obama is being auctioned for charity.

The navy blue outfit, embroidered with gold pinstripes bearing Modi's name, was mocked by Modi's opponents, and even the party faithful said it undermined the voter-friendly narrative of Modi's humble beginnings as the son of a tea seller.
"Modi's image as a son of a tea vendor was his trump card," said a senior election campaign adviser to the party. "Voters admired his simplicity, but now he is viewed as a flashy leader."

'MISTAKE'

The day before the suit went on auction, Modi broke months of silence after a series of attacks on Christian institutions in New Delhi and vowed to protect all religious groups.

"Voters did not expect him to be silent after churches were attacked," said the BJP leader. "We realise that it was a mistake."
Urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu said the Delhi elections were a setback for the BJP and cause for introspection, but denied Modi had lost touch with voters.

"There is no change in their regard and admiration for Narendra Modi," Naidu told Headlines Today television this week. "People love him."
The day after Naidu spoke, senior BJP official Prodyut Bora quit. In his resignation letter to the party's powerful president, Amit Shah, the rebel complained about the centralisation of power in the prime minister's office.
Bora, who set up the BJP unit that spread the party's message through social media, said Modi's leadership style was damaging democracy within the party.

People might soon forget that Modi's monogrammed pinstripe suit cost as much as a million rupees ($16,100), Bora told Reuters.
"But the increasing arrogance of top (party) leaders does not seem to be fading away," he said.

    KRPrabhu,
We are happy with the progress made by our people in varied fields like, Education, Charity, Politics, Medicine,Media Literature, banking, business etc.
We have not been so successful in business particularly in India in comparison with YOU people like (Konkanas, Gujarati, Marwaris, Punjabis etc.)
To succeed in business in India, lot of tricks and issues handling are involved to be successful. As per the analysis, our people generally did not like those. However, our community is flexible, poised to improve upon weak areas of life and move on! Our critics are our driving force!

Dear Valerian,I appriciate your concurrence to my views. In my view only George Fernandes excelled in politician and though he never elected from the DK,made immense contribution to us by gifting Konkan Railway to the region. No other leaders had the courage/guts of making this to happen otherwise. He is a great orator/parliamentarian.When he stoo up in the parilament even late PM Indira Gandhi too was shewring to answer him.So fearless powerfull speaker he was.
Generally your community people are known to be sincere and god fearing like Konkans. But we took risk in life and therefore came up in life. But you people never took risk so the growth phase is low.Siliarity with in RS and Konkans is that both have no criminal records, even in banks least NPAs from our people,no underworld connection,no murdering, looting or cheating.

Vincy,There is a general feeling that RCs are the most educationally forward people in the country. They run good schools and lot of great personalities has their early education in Christain convents. Many times I wonder why the people who are so experts in educational field failed in all fronts including politics.
There are no notable persona in:
    Industral circles,
    Politics
No freedom fighters worth to mention
    No great bussiness people
    No good doctors
    No great writters
here are several 'No's if one searches any fields.I fail to understand this.Whether educated ,good english, hindi spoken people necessarily become PM or President?

When Graham Stains and his young children were burnt alive in the Car in Orissa State, then PM A.B. Vajapayee was genuinely saddened. He asked the people to fast and pray so that such incidents should never occur again. After some time he went to meet Pope and tried to remove trust deficiency!
That was his genuine humble and tolerant nature.
If PM Modi tries to emulate Shri. A.B. Vajapayee, it is quite late, but better than never! Established character builds image!

After Delhi elections defeat, now Modi is like “ಬಿಸಿ ಯಾಗದೆ ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ಕರಗದು” butter won’t melt unless it made hot. After lok-saba elections and couple of other states elections win PM Modi thought voters are under him. But Delhi elections defeat made him to feel that he is under voters. Again a surprising “U” turn by BJP.

somewhere Modis astrologers must have told him if you trouble christians you will never be successful in your PM role, so the tone down mode from Modi bhai started sooner than later. He tried to play with christians but Jesus never fails us in what we towards per his teaching to human kind. Yeddi will never be successful anytime in his life time because he played a great role in attacking our churches and created unwanted court cases and today he is the loser without any issues created to him by Christians. Modi you learned your lesson quickly man. good job boy.

..when US President Barack Obama chose to pinpoint the issue of religious intolerance in India in widely publicised speeches, both in India and on his return to the US. While he made no specific mention of the BJP being responsible, his comments were widely read as a veiled critique of the Modi government.

Crucially, it’s not just churches that are periodically vandalised and robbed in India. With incidents of theft alone, according to the Delhi Police, 206 temples, 30 gurdwaras and three churches (out of some 200 or more churches in Delhi) and 14 mosques were burgled in 2014. And such crimes didn’t mysteriously start to occur in May 2014 after the BJP’s victory — as with other crimes, they routinely occur every year in Delhi as the data show.

Even in an open and shut case like the Vikaspuri incident in which the perpetrators were caught and confessed to the drunken dare, Archbishop Cuoto maintains in the face of the evidence that he was dissatisfied with the police explanation, without explaining how the CCTV footage and the perpetrators’ own confession somehow bears a different interpretation.

Despite the facts pointing in one direction, church leaders and commentators, both in the domestic and foreign media who parrot their line, continue to insist that there’s a pattern to the incidents, the motivation is communal, and the BJP or affiliated groups are somehow responsible. An entire narrative of a rising tide of religious intolerance in India has been crafted, on the back of unpersuasive evidence, such as these six incidents and misinformation around the conversion and reconversion debate in India.

Church leaders and their media acolytes have every right to dislike the BJP or Hindu groups if they so wish. But it’s irresponsible and downright dangerous if they promote their agenda in the face of the facts.

Attack on any innocent and any place of worship irrespective of of faiths should be deplored including the recent one in U.S.
    Aggrieved parties will always protest.
But what you all have to say about BJP M.P's Sadhvi Jyoti's & Sakshi Maharaj's radicalized speeches? Why exclude them? Are they not responsible in bringing bad name to BJP? Please denounce them too, don't encourage!
