Dhaka, Feb 21 (IANS): Bangladesh's Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman will file a petition against an apex court verdict upholding the death sentence awarded to him by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for his atrocities during the 1971 Liberation War.
“A review petition has to be filed within 15 days from the publication of a full verdict. We'll file the petition before the deadline ends,” Kamaruzzaman's lawyer Tazul Islam said Saturday, according to a report in bdnews24.com.
“One of the judges found him (Kamaruzzaman) innocent,” Tazul said, adding that Kamaruzzaman had asked his lawyers to file the review petition based on the judge's findings.
The ICT sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death May 9, 2013, and the Supreme Court of Bangladesh upheld the verdict.
The ICT is a specially constituted court set up to prosecute those who committed war crimes committed during Bangladesh's 1971 War of Independence.
